Minutes of the July 12, 2008 meeting of the Rochester Dahlia Society

The meeting was convened by President Kathleen Doell in Room 110 of the First Unitarian Church with 15 members attending.

Minutes of the previous meeting had been e-mailed or snail-mailed so were not read. No corrections or additions were forthcoming so the minutes were accepted as presented.

Treasurer’s Report by Margaret McMaster.

Some of the composite listing books that were ordered were distributed and four are available for those who ordered them. Judging booklets are still available for $3.59 each. See Diane if you would like one.

A List of this year’s area shows was distributed. It is hoped that our club can be represented at as many of these as possible.

There was discussion of where apprentice judges are on their judging requirements. If possible the test should be taken this summer. Each apprentice judge is responsible for keeping track of the shows and dates when they have acted as judges. This is to be submitted to Ed Miller of the Southern Tier Society who will administer the tests. There seems to be a problem as to where the test is, however this should be taken care of by the next meeting.

Our Dahlia Display Garden at the Webster Arboretum is fully planted and Eric Neely has installed the watering system.

Our summer Picnic will be at noon on July 26th at Hemlock Shelter on Log Cabin Road in Durand Eastman Park. Direction slips were distributed as well as a list of who is bringing what. Hopefully others not present at this meeting will be able to attend. Call Sue Webster ###-#### for information.

Garden tours for this summer are still in limbo. Joyce Hogarth and Sue Webster will try to straighten it out and provide dates and locations at the July 26th picnic.

Members were asked to research sources of used digital projectors with the idea of buying one for the club. There are several possibilities. It would be a big help to have our own equipment.

Storage of our show equipment was discussed. There was considerable discussion as to whether the show vases need to be stored whole or whether they could be broken down and stored more efficiently. It was decided that we will try the condensed version this year. Ed Recotta offered to store the plastic lugs of vases and wedges in his garage. This will be a big help. Margaret McMaster will keep all the paperwork.

Libbie Rosati showed samples of very nice t-shirts with our Rochester Dahlia Society logo for $10 and also tote bags which are available. A number of members purchased these. Others should contact Libbie at ###-#### if they wish to purchase one.

Since we no longer have a dahlia show poster provided by the Scheuermans, Mary Feasel has designed a poster which can be printed by Nannette Szott at Standard Register for $50/100. While we don’t really need 100, that is the price. We can each distribute several of them.

Members were alerted to look for the nice article Diane Johanson submitted to the ADS Bulletin on our club. See page 39 of the June issue.

The Program for the day was a demonstration on how to stage a show bloom: Show booklets were handed out. Please put your name on yours as we only have enough for one book per family. While we don’t have enough dahlias in bloom at present, rose blooms were used instead to explain how to use wedges to show the bloom at the proper angle etc.

Clerking directions were discussed and the procedure explained. Information on clerk’s duties is available from our Website, rochesterdahliasociety.com… More information will be available at the next meeting.

A suggestion was made that, at the show, senior judges, apprentice judges, and clerks all have nametags showing their duty. This will help to identify them to our members as well as to the public.

Thanks to Diane Johanson for delicious dessert and Ed Recotta for beverages.

Respectfully submitted by Recording Secretary Sue Webster.
